Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Auburn, AL has a some great recycling options . They will pick up certain recyclables at the curb with your regular garbage pickup and also have a drop-off facility. Or for household items that might still have a little life in them check out the thrift stores or freecycle links on the left.

Curbside Recycling
  • Aluminum Cans Soda cans, foil, and pie tins; separated from steel cans
  • Brown Glass Separate from clear glass
  • Cardboard Flatten boxes and brown paper bags
  • Clear Glass Separate from brown glass
  • Newspaper Neatly stacked or bundled newspaper
  • Steel or Tin Cans Separated from aluminum cans
  • Plastic Bottles #1 PET, PETE and #2 HDPE

Drop-off Recycling

  • Aluminum Soda cans, drink cans, beer cans, foil and pie tins
  • Batteries Dry cell only;AA, AAA, C, D, cell phone, hearing aid. No batteries containing liquid acid
  • Cardboard Flatten corrugated boxes and brown paper bags
  • Cartridges Ink and Laser Jet, not including Epson brand
  • Computers Contact our office Monday through Friday to schedule an appointment
  • Glass Separated by color; clear, brown & green
  • Magazines Magazines and telephone books
  • Mixed paper Computer, office, notebook, shredded
  • Newspaper Newsprint only
  • Plastics #1’s & #2’s, which only include the following: plastic soda, milk jugs, ketchup, shampoo, detergent, bleach, water, juice. (Look under the bottom of the container for numbering.)
  • Steel/Tin Cans Metal cans and food cans. Scrap metals not included.

During January and February, telephone books are accepted at the drop-off center.

The Environmental Services Department conducts an annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day event.

Instructions for preparing material to recycle:

Just empty the containers, rinse, remove all tops or lids and place them in a recycling bin, box or bag marked recycling. There is no need to remove the labels from cans or jars, but it is important to flatten all boxes, stack newspapers, and to separate each item as listed above. Place your recycling a few feet away from your household garbage and yard waste, but within three feet of the roadway if leaving it for curbside pickup.
